Is it a bad idea to carry 2 backpacks when traveling South America for 9 months? (one for the front and one for the back)

I'm asking because I NEED to carry the backpack on the image below for my 17.3 inches laptop and all valuables (passport, money, expensive gear, etc.)

My question:

But I don't know how large my SECOND backpack should be?

Would it be best to buy a BIG 70-liter backpack, so I can fit my OTHER backpack inside it? (So I'm only carrying one backpack with all my valuables and everything else)

Or would it be best to buy a 30-40 liter backpack and then carry one on the front and one on the back? (This way I can separate my valuables from everything else)
