Split the ticket into pieces (longest possible flights between countries) and build your own route (you can save a lot AND on top of that have long stays - like months long). One of the key tools I used to teach my ticket brokers before the world went on lockdown was to begin by researching in Flightconnections(dotcom).Then from there, go back to a meta search engine (Skyscanner works) and search for these direct flights on the Multiple Cities function instead of One Way or Round Ticket.With this strategy, I've managed to get tickets from Mexico to the Republic of Georgia for 400 USD while staying for a month in Turkey to visit friends. I like Rome2rio.  I’m American and get too caught up in thinking I have to fly everywhere.  It’s nice to see the other options like trains, buses and ferries

There’s only one thing that really saves you money and that’s travel hacking. Learning how to use miles&points and search engines like ITA Matrix. But like any skill, it takes time and effort to learn this. Things like “in-private browsing” or “booking flights on Tuesdays” don’t work.
