Saw some hippie pics from Goa and now i have questions!! How did the hippies 1970-80's etc earn while travelling ?? It was like work from home ? Or they were like analogue nomads ? Quite advanced tribe i must admit to their time :)

I am a Digital Nomad now but spent a few years backpacking..... Lonely Planet and youth hostels.  Fellow travellers would tell stories about their travels and that would be your guide.  We worked selling jewellery and leather, handmade goods, I painted T shirts.  Jobs  were available in some countries, Fishing in Iceland for the brave, picking seasonal fruit in Europe,  kibbutz in Israel, nannies in the UK.  We heard from fellow travellers where the best weed was, the best jobs.  We slept on beaches and in parks often, it was safe back then.  Caught midnight ferries to unknown places.  The biggest difference is the isolation of being a DN.  Those days you survived by meeting fellow backpackers.  Often joining forces with new friends to tackle a new country.

My parents bought an unfinished VW van directly from the factory. They built it themselves to their liking and lived in it for one year, in the parking lot of the school they used to teach at. They saved all their money. Then they took off and went travelling around the Americas for two years. My current cover picture is them in a magazine in 1970.

I lived on $100/mo in bangkok in the late 80s. I was no hippy.Started one year trip with $3000 in traveler's checks from selling a car in US. At one point was down to my last couple hundred in india. Made it back to Thailand, taught English, then made it to Japan, where I could save $1k/mo on teacher's pay. So non-digital nomad.

Being organised. Saving. Working where you could. Airfares from Australia hellishly expensive. No internet and often no phone because international calls were so expensive. Surviving on your wits. Getting into HECTIC situations and having to get yourself out of them cos there was nobody to call for help. Lonely planet the bible, back when it was an actual guide not a series of ads. If you met travellers there was mutual respect because you knew what it took to be there.

Then they started building a small home, then a second home, and so on. Soon enough it became a small village which he rented to friends and family who wanted to experience the Thai beauty and nature. Within 15 years, the village became a resort, and it is what it is today. They are still traveling the world, the oldest nomads I've ever met
