I’ve been working remotely for a US company for a few months in the states but I’m thinking of traveling aboard. I have a VPN. Is there any way my employer would know I’m working aboard?

Depends a lot on your job. Besides the VPN thing, I know from people that were discovered that they are working from out of the country because of unfamiliar police or ambulance car sounds driving by during a phone call, neighbors shouting in strange languages, apps that report location (gps), screenshots from your phone with a foreign carrier displayed, lag during video calls because of bad internet, boss stalking their instagram and on and on it goes.Better ask for permission first before receiving a "you are fired" abroad.

Honestly, how could I trust you as an employee if you're not capable or willing to ask permission for a personal decision that might have consequences for your employer? Trust is a mutual thing, not a 'Shush, nobody knows" thing.

Omg, these answers make me so happy I’ve never been working for a company, but just for myself and my own freelance business. This all sounds like a slavery. I understand there are some reasons. But you give hours of your one and only life, then you give away freedom of moving. Not sure what amount of money would compensate this

This has been discussed ad nauseam, you are opening your employer to significant legal liability and you would be considered to be in breach of your employment contract and liable for breach of trust, talk to your employer or quit your job if you plan to work offshore. Other option is to change the arrangement from being an employee to a contractor.
