Best city in Mexico to stay long term? In terms of housing, stuff to do, cost of living etc.

So many people seem to be mentioning only beach locations that are overpriced and overrun by white tourists. Get out of those areas! If the issue is that you don't speak Spanish, learn it! Living in Mexico isn't about sitting in a comfortable co-working space eating gourmet Mexican food, it's eating 10 peso tacos from an abuelita on the street in an area no one's ever heard of! Okay so I've been living here for nearly 4 months now, and am getting to know daily live in a variety of places, living a month in each to decide where I want to be based. SO FAR I'VE LIVED IN.: 1. Queretaro2. Xalapa3. Playa del Carmen4. Bacalar5. Chetumal (recently arrived)Bacalar was hands down my favorite, because the nature was perfect and I needed calm, but pretty quickly it got expensive and also I need access to professional dance training, so I couldnt stay in Bacalar long-term. But that's how I decided to come to Chetumal-- was trying to stay in a place with the same nature but also far more civilization (supermarkets) that Bacalar lacks. I dont recommend Playa unless party and tourist focus is what you need. My body was miserable in the huge temperature differences within one day that Queretaro has everyday-- because of its elevation (and with no heating in most houses in my first two cities, which means the inside of your house gets super cold without a space heater when it's cold outside), which all the more disqualifies CDMX for me as well, and Xalapa was similarly problematic in that regard, but add that nearly no one spoke English (or Polish, or German). In the end it's vital for you to know what aspects of lifestyle are important to you-- I want to live in a place hot all year round, which, turns out that plenty of Mexico isnt. I also need access to professional dance and spaces to rent because I'm a choreographer. You likely dont need these, but I'd ask-- what DO you need, and then do your research in terms of the aspects you need and will appreciate having in your life!! This has worked well in Quintana Roo, but Xalapa was in the mountains, super steep and dangerous to bike. Or, I want to be somewhere where I can befriend Mexicans but also foreigners, which in Playa the foreigners in my age group are mostly tourists, which arent the best demographic for making long term presential friendships with. Things like that.💛 Anyway, I hope my thoughts help someone. In the end I strongly believe you need to go live to know what a place is like and how you feel, because each cloth I've lived in has felt more like a totally different country!!😯😱 Make a list of aspect you hope for and ask people who know specific places how the place compares to your list!💪
