Hi guys! What is your experience with talking languages when living for long time in the same country?I’m Italian, bilingual English, almost trilingual French (after 2 years in France).When I arrived, I was forcing myself to speak only French to learn it, and as a result, I learned, but I was forgetting English, and even talking Italian in a different - weird - way.On the opposite, I see now that the more I get used to switching from one language to another every day, the better I speak them all. Do you ever make language confusion in your mind?🙃😅Do you train all of your languages every day?

ciao 😊 me too, now I speak Italian with a French accent and English with an Italian 😊 since I live in Sri Lanka now, I also started to add the head waggle when I speak 😅

I am French but I live in Portugal, I don't really speak Portuguese but as I know Spanish I can easily understand. Moreover my boyfriend is German but my German isn't good enough to have conversation so we talk in English. And I realised recently that my brain is selective, it choses the easiest words from every language that I know. It is okay because I still can speak French and English very good but for example last time I said to my boyfriend " To cook the CRÊPES use the GIRASOL oil and when the side of the dough starts to be KNUSPRIG, it is perfect !" Yeah a sentence in English, with French, Portuguese and German inside !

Yes! And yes, the more you speak all the languages, the easier it is to switch between them without forgetting them, sounding weird or misusing them. Funny how the mind works! 😊

Interesting question! I feel the language is very connected to what you think of and the emotion. Im multilingual and realized that when I write “to do lists”, those become also multilingual depending on who / what Im thinking of! Also some emotions and expressions are so connected to the language, you cant express it in an other... so the brain naturally seems to want to switch to that language. Also interesting is what language we think in... I thought it would have been my native language, but after 10 years abroad I tend to think in English (not native). Have a nice weekend! ☀️

I speak English as my native language, Filipino as second, Spanish as third. I definitely get confused and when I start speaking one language I need to buffer before transitioning to the next. I most especially need at least 30minutes of exposure to Spanish before getting into the jive of speaking it with confidence. Then when I transition back to English, my accent takes on a funny sound.
