I did the normal university route but everything I REALLY needed to know, I actually learned via Google and hard lessons. I'm wondering how many other people did the same and how many were smart enough to skip "the traditional route."

When people gripe about how their university degree wasn't worth the money, it's generally because they studied art history, music, anthropology, psychology, communications, sociology, or some other "fun" major that isn't valued by employers.

PhD. I have a tenured position at a university in the states with mostly asynchronous online classes and I pick up travel teaching jobs at international universities. Since I make well beyond 6-figures doing this, my main university pays my health insurance (valid worldwide), and the international universities pay expenses, I’m not so sure the OP’s assumption that skipping the traditional route is one-size-fits all. 😆

I went to school for 23 years. Yes, it was costly but I don’t really even feel like I can connect well with people who don’t have at least a university degree, mostly advanced degrees. You’re definitely not having the same level of conversation and discussion. College also teaches you about life, people, hard work, task accomplishment, all nighters and friendship. I introduce people to what I do online all the time but they’re simply too scared because they never did anything on their own nor took initiative before. I am so happy I found a group of similarly situated people in one of the contract jobs I do internationally. Its a dream job. & It’s not something you’d be eligible for without at least a bachelor’s degree. There are people with PhDs.I’ve been offered several jobs in various countries based on “credentials.” My main goal is living and working in other countries. Do what works for you.

Charlotte Mason, a 19th century philosopher and educator, said the only real education is self-education. Then she spent her entire life developing principles that help teachers stir up a student’s desire to learn across a multitude of subjects - she called it a “Feast”. College makes regular ppl into sheeple but forsaking college to only learn money-making skills has problems too. I’m writing all this out to say that modern society has very little idea of what a Renaissance education is.. one of invention, mastery, art, history, rhetoric, AND technical skills that help your fellow man. I highly recommend John Taylor Gatto’s books if you’re interested in this subject. A LOT of ppl are challenging the status quo by doing things differently. It’s really exciting. I’m a massage therapist who can discuss stocks/coding/AI/graphic design and religion. Now I build businesses using funnel secrets. I got my GED and I went to trade school. 🙂
